Traveling alone is fairly safe for women in Malaysia. For women, try to avoid being seen as “easy” in most situations, so a wedding ring helps or a “Yes, I am married” to the inevitable query. Ignore wolf whistles and catcalls. If you are approached, be polite but firm. Mostly people are just being friendly, even if some might be hoping for something more. If you start feeling uneasy, walk away. Be careful about being over-friendly with your tour guide.
Malaysians stare – both women and men. Therefore, try to avoid wearing revealing clothes in areas that are newer to tourism so not to invite harassment. In Malaysia’s rural societies, young women rarely approach or speak to male strangers, and travel is virtually unheard of, let alone traveling alone.
Moreover, topless and nude sunbathing is strictly prohibited.
