One Utama or 1 Utama is a popular shopping mall in Bandar Utama, a suburb in the northern part of Petaling Jaya and is located just opposite Taman Tun Dr. Ismail. 1 Utama is also popularly known as “One U” for short or sometimes as “O U”. One Utama is a massive shopping center with gross built-up areas totaling 5 million square feet (465,000 m2). It consists of two wings, namely the New Wing and Old Wing.
The New Wing, newly opened in 2004, was officially launched by the Sultan of Selangor. The retail precincts of Highstreet, Oval, Entertainment Zone and Rainforest as well as Promenade, Cold Storage supermarket and Parkson departmental store are some of the popular tenants of the New Wing. The Old Wing, comprising the retail precincts of Courtyard and Centre Court as well as Jusco departmental store and supermarket, was opened in 1995. In addition, a 20-storey corporate office tower (occupied by IBM and KPMG) has been completed and a 428-room 5-star hotel attached to the.
One U is also the only shopping complex in Malaysia to house two major cinemas. On the Old Wing is the 7-screen TGV Cinemas and on the New Wing is the 13-screen Golden Screen Cinemas. The Golden Screen Cinemas includes a 30-seater Gold Class hall while the other 12 halls feature comfortable and spacious seating. One Utama has won several prestigious awards. One of which is the “Shopping Complex of the Year” at the Retail World Excellence Awards 2006/07.
There is a great deal of dispute over whether the name of the mall is “One Utama” or “1 Utama”. A recent press release by the management (Bandar Utama City Centre Sdn. Bhd.) states that the official name is 1 Utama Shopping Centre and not “One Utama” or “1-Utama”. This move was meant to limit the confusion of its name, although either one of the mentioned names are easily understood and cannot be confused because of their same meaning.
1 Utama is so popular that the daily visitors to this incredible shopping center are roughly 60,000 to 90,000. The number can shoot up to twice as much totaling at 120,000 visitors on weekends. The occupancy rate of One Utama is reputedly to be 99%. An adjacent shopping mall in the neighborhood called Centrepoint is as popular as 1 Utama. Even though it’s nowhere near the size of 1 Utama, the Centrepoint is also a good alternative to 1 Utama.
Moreover, there are several shopping malls located in the neighboring township near 1 Utama such as the The Curve, IKEA, Cathay Cineleisure with 10 screens under Cathay Cineplex and Ikano. All are trying to cash in on the success of 1 Utama and Centrepoint.
Getting to One Utama:
There are two ways to get to One Utama. The easiest way is probably to drive there via the LDP Highway. For driving direction, please see the 1 Utama map at below.
Another way is to take public transport. The Bandar Utama bus hub is located in the vicinity of 1 Utama. There exists a free shuttle service from several areas such as the Kelana Jaya LRT station and Sunrise Mont Kiara to increase accessibility. Apart from that, the 1 Utama has recently introduced a new shuttle service to and from Cyberjaya. However, this shuttle service is not free and costs RM3.00 per trip (coupons need to be purchased at 1 Utama’s Customer Information Counter).
