As Langkawi awaits to be gazetted as a Unesco Geological Park, one resort has already carved a name for itself as a sustainable eco-resort.
PULAU Langkawi, one of Malaysia’s favourite playgrounds, has already been gazetted as the region’s first Unesco Geological Park (Geopark). With 99 islands and many tourist attractions, Langkawi packs in holidays makers, sun worshippers and eco-tourists.

The luxury touch of the Frangipani resort.
While so much is happening in and around Langkawi, one resort there is walking the extra mile to add to the island’s ecological conservation efforts. The Frangipani Langkawi Resort and Spa is already carving a name for itself as a sustainable eco-resort.
The Four ‘R’s
At the resort, the catch-phrases frequently used are reduce, reuse, recover, recycle – compost and recover energy and dispose. All rooms come with energy saving air-conditioners and are fully furnished with recycled furniture.
Nothing is thrown away or wasted. Vegetation is pruned and trimmed regularly and the leaves as well as kitchen refuse are turned into compost. Vegetables are organically grown and served daily to guests.

The Frangipani resort is situated right by the beach.
Driftwood becomes part of the landscape with so much more being done. Paint containers are turned into rubbish bins and wood purchased from Jogjakarta to help the earthquake victims there are made into furniture.
The Frangipani Boat, a boat stranded on the beach after the 2004 tsunami, has been turned into a cocktail place. Frangipani Resort is named after the plant and frangipani blooms add beautiful colour to the resort.
The resort also wants to be a role model as far as the Geopark project is concerned. It is working at being a reputable eco resort. “It is just not about the resort, but also the people of Langkawi.
We want to educate them on the importance of maintaining the island as a geopark when we receive the status,” said its environment education officer Nurul Fatanah Zahari. “We bring in students from local schools and take them around on education tours to show them our many conservation efforts. It is important to start them young.”
The Unesco defines a geopark as a “territory encompassing one or more sites of scientific importance, not only for geological reasons but also by virtue of its archaeological, ecological or cultural value”.
Walk, Walk, Walk
“This is one resort where you can just walk in and out of. There are no elevators and everything is within walking distance including Pantai Tengah and Pantai Cenang,” said general manager Egon M. Lassmann.
“Most of our guests go from chalet or room to restaurant and beach. Some don’t leave the resort at all for the entire duration of their stay.” Unlike in the major cities, Lassmann says, it is safe to walk everywhere, especially Pantai Cenang and Pantai Tengah.

The pristine surrounding by the beach.
The place has many shops, bars, restaurants, cafes and duty-free outlets, so it is no surprise to find resort guests making their way there after dinner to enjoy Langkawi’s nightlife.
“On the beach, guests can lie around or have their sporting activities uninterrupted. There are no traders to annoy or disturb holiday makers.” The four-star resort enjoys an occupancy rate of 55 to 65 per cent. While Frangipani resort gets its fair share of foreigners, Lassmann said the domestic market is just as important.
